The Villages, located just north of Orlando and south of Oala, house one of Florida's largest retirement communities. Many people think that retirement communities are sleepy condo complexes with bingo and card games. If you think that The Villages remotely resembles this picture...you'd be 100% wrong.
This community houses a population well over the 10,000 mark and is still growing. The whole are takes up almost 6 square miles of land. Within this area, there are small 'villages' or neighborhoods that consist of every type of home imaginable. From Manufactured homes to large 4 bedroom homes with pools and hot-tubs...you can find the size to fit your needs. Each 'neighborhood' is connected not only by regular 'surface' streets, but they also have an extensive 'golf cart' road system. As you drive through the area, you will see all kinds of 'golf carts'. 2, 4 or 6 person versions along with some the resemble expensive high-end cars. Since they are electric, it will cost a lot less to operate than a regular car.
There are over 20 golf-courses within The Villages as well. Some are free with your monthly maintenance while some require an additional fee. There are also large 'community centers' in each neighborhood that contain pools and lots of room for fun activities. The Villages also contain two 'town square' areas. Each houses shopping, dining and have daily free entertainment for spectators. There are also so many clubs to join, you could be busy every minute of every day if you wish.
The community is quite active and there is so much to do in The Villages, you might find yourself only stopping home to sleep. There are many used homes to buy along with some new construction homes. There are also many options for leasing...either short term (by the week) or long term (by the month or year).
The Villages is not your 'parents' retirement community.
